This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 460 pages. Book excerpt: Lively debates on controversial and compelling questions in the philosophy of religion — an updated edition of the bestselling title Building upon the reputation of the first edition, the extensively revised second edition of Contemporary Debates in Philosophy of Religion features fifteen essays which present arguments on some of the most central and controversial topics in philosophy of religion from the discipline’s most influential thinkers. Considering questions of both emerging and perennial interest from atheistic, theistic, and agnostic viewpoints, the book adopts the series structure which pairs essays espousing opposing perspectives on a particular question or theme in an engaging pro and con format. Following accessible introductions to each debate, the volume’s new and newly-revised contributions set the stage for thoughtful and lively discourse between philosophers in philosophy of religion and analytic theology. Debates range from vigorous disagreements between theists and their critics to arguments between theists of different philosophical and theological persuasions, highlighting points of contrast for readers while showcasing the field’s leading minds in dialogue. The head-to-head chapters offer forceful advocacy for some of the most compelling ideas, beliefs, and objections in the philosophy of religion, opening the conversation up to students to weigh the arguments and engage in comparative analysis of the concepts for themselves. Written to appeal to the non-specialist as well as the professional philosopher, Contemporary Debates in Philosophy of Religion is ideal as both a provocative primary text for coursework in analytical theology and philosophy of religion, and as a broad survey of the field for scholars and general readers with an interest in the questions which underpin contemporary philosophy of religion and theology.

Book excerpt: Warrior Rising: Seven Journeys Book 1 By: Ann Shaw The time of the Elfain Warriors is over. Their tales of bravery and their ability to wield the elements are all that remain of the heroes of old. However, there are the Foretellings that tell of the Warrior’s return to defeat a black shadow that threatens to destroy the Kingdom of Albavar. Gildon is a scholar and a wanderer. He believes that the warriors will return, and he thinks that he may have found one of them in Cole, an orphan and an apprentice to a carpenter. Cole may seem normal, but Gildon soon discovers that Cole can wield, and not only that, but he can see the future or past of anyone he touches. Because of his gift, he sees an old enemy of Albavar rise again. Shelrin, the once dark Warlord who ruled over Albavar with cruelty and malice, has broken free of Grimhold prison and is determined to take back the Kingship’s throne. Bearing the weapons of ancient power, Shelrin seems unstoppable. But there is hope. The Elfain Warrior and Seer, Ayden, saw the war that would rise long after he was gone. He ordered seven weapons be hidden throughout the land, so when the time came, the returning warriors would find them and use them to destroy the great darkness that threatens Albavar. Because of his gift, Cole knows where these weapons are. So, with the help of seven companions, Cole sets out to travel across Albavar to find the weapons and fight the darkness that Shelrin is causing. As the first book in the Seven Journeys series, Warrior Rising will thrill readers and show that even those who have gone before us still hold a great strength which is passed to the current generation.

This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 248 pages. Book excerpt: Infinity is paradoxical in many ways. Some paradoxes involve deterministic supertasks, such as Thomson's Lamp, where a switch is toggled an infinite number of times over a finite period of time, or the Grim Reaper, where it seems that infinitely many reapers can produce a result without doing anything. Others involve infinite lotteries. If you get two tickets from an infinite fair lottery where tickets are numbered from 1, no matter what number you saw on the first ticket, it is almost certain that the other ticket has a bigger number on it. And others center on paradoxical results in decision theory, such as the surprising observation that if you perform a sequence of fair coin flips that goes infinitely far back into the past but only finitely into the future, you can leverage information about past coin flips to predict future ones with only finitely many mistakes. Alexander R. Pruss examines this seemingly large family of paradoxes in Infinity, Causation and Paradox. He establishes that these paradoxes and numerous others all have a common structure: their most natural embodiment involves an infinite number of items causally impinging on a single output. These paradoxes, he argues, can all be resolved by embracing 'causal finitism', the view that it is impossible for a single output to have an infinite causal history. Throughout the book, Pruss exposits such paradoxes, defends causal finitism at length, and considers connections with the philosophy of physics (where causal finitism favors but does not require discretist theories of space and time) and the philosophy of religion (with a cosmological argument for a first cause).

This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 240 pages. Book excerpt: Did the universe begin to exist? If so, did it have a cause? Or could it have come into existence uncaused, from nothing? These questions are taken up by the medieval-though recently-revived-kalam cosmological argument, which has arguably been the most discussed philosophical argument for God's existence in recent decades. The kalam's line of reasoning maintains that the series of past events cannot be infinite but rather is finite. Since the universe could not have come into being uncaused, there must be a transcendent cause of the universe's beginning, a conclusion supportive of theism. This anthology on the philosophical arguments for the finitude of the past asks: Is an infinite series of past events metaphysically possible? Should actual infinites be restricted to theoretical mathematics, or can an actual infinite exist in the concrete world? These essays by kalam proponents and detractors engage in lively debate about the nature of infinity and its conundrums; about frequently-used kalam argument paradoxes of Tristram Shandy, the Grim Reaper, and Hilbert's Hotel; and about the infinity of the future.

Read and Download Sue Eleanor Headlee book The Political Economy of the Family Farm in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Free book TThe Political Economy of the Family Farm. This book was released on 1991 with total page 212 pages. Book excerpt: In this work, Headlee argues that the family farm system--with its progressive nature and egalitarian class structure--played an important role in the transition to capitalism in the mid-nineteenth century United States. The family farm is examined in light of its economic and political implications, showing the relationship between the family farm and flegling industrial capitalism, a relationship that fostered the simultaneous industrial and agricultural revolutions. Headlee focuses on the adoption of the horse-drawn mechanical reaper (to harvest wheat) by family farmers in the 1850s.
