Book excerpt: No Place for a Lady charts Thea Rosenbaums turbulent life from a little girl escaping the Soviet Army with her mother in Berlin in 1945 to becoming Germanys first woman stock broker at Oppenheimer and Co. to Germanys only woman war correspondent in Vietnam. She then embarked on a career as producer for ARD German television in the US, where she was White House pool producer for foreign correspondents from the late 70s to late 2000s. In this capacity, she traveled with five presidents and was present in Germany for the end of the Cold War as the Berlin Wall fell. Her life, as a civilian, correspondent, and producer, bookends and charts the greatest conflict of the later half of the twentieth century. As she rose in the ranks of a difficult career, she was constantly overcoming her sense of inferiority, ugliness, and even stupidity. While becoming a journalist was always something she aspired to, as a young lady, she believed she was too stupid to achieve it, and yet she was able to succeed in every facet of the work for five decades. At every point in her historic career, she overcame the under-expectations and prejudices of her contemporaries as well as, and most especially, her own inner weakness and self-deprecation. As to the history she witnessed, she gathered chocolate in the streets of Berlin that the Americans dropped during the Berlin Airlift. As a West Berliner, she was there the night the barbed wire first went up, hardening the East/West divide. Later, and as a journalist, she was in Khe-Sanh in 68 when it was the focus of attack by the NVA until the Tet Offensive began, when she reported on the NVA and Vietcong attacks from Nam O, Hue, and Saigon. She was the first woman to report from a nuclear submarine. She covered the Carter administration for the Camp David Accords as well as reporting from Cairo when the deal was finalized. No Place for a Lady also reveals many of Theas funny, and sometimes not, interactions with Americas greatest journalists.

Read and Download Jay Ellis book No Place for Home in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Free book TNo Place for Home. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 368 pages. Book excerpt: This book was written to venture beyond interpretations of Cormac McCarthy's characters as simple, antinomian, and non-psychological; and of his landscapes as unrelated to the violent arcs of often orphaned and always emotionally isolated and socially detached characters. As McCarthy usually eschews direct indications of psychology, his landscapes allow us to infer much about their motivations. The relationship of ambivalent nostalgia for domesticity to McCarthy's descriptions of space remains relatively unexamined at book length, and through less theoretical application than close reading. By including McCarthy's latest book, this study offer the only complete study of all nine novels. Within McCarthy studies, this book extends and complicates a growing interest in space and domesticity in his work. The author combines a high regard for McCarthy's stylistic prowess with a provocative reading of how his own psychological habits around gender issues and family relations power books that only appear to be stories of masculine heroics, expressions of misogynistic fear, or antinomian rejections of civilized life.

Read and Download David F. Wells book No Place for Truth in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Free book TNo Place for Truth. This book was released on 1994-12-20 with total page 427 pages. Book excerpt: Has something indeed happened to evangelical theology and to evangelical churches? According to David Wells, the evidence indicates that evangelical pastors have abandoned their traditional role as ministers of the Word to become therapists and "managers of the small enterprises we call churches." Along with their parishioners, they have abandoned genuine Christianity and biblical truth in favor of the sort of inner-directed experiential religion that now pervades Western society. Specifically, Wells explores the wholesale disappearance of theology in the church, the academy, and modern culture. Western culture as a whole, argues Wells, has been transformed by modernity, and the church has simply gone with the flow. The new environment in which we live, with its huge cities, triumphant capitalism, invasive technology, and pervasive amusements, has vanquished and homogenized the entire world. While the modern world has produced astonishing abundance, it has also taken a toll on the human spirit, emptying it of enduring meaning and morality. Seeking respite from the acids of modernity, people today have increasingly turned to religions and therapies centered on the self. And, whether consciously or not, evangelicals have taken the same path, refashioning their faith into a religion of the self. They have been coopted by modernity, have sold their soul for a mess of pottage. According to Wells, they have lost the truth that God stands outside all human experience, that he still summons sinners to repentance and belief regardless of their self-image, and that he calls his church to stand fast in his truth against the blandishments of a godless world. The first of three volumes meant to encourage renewal in evangelical theology (the other two to be written by Cornelius Plantinga Jr. and Mark Noll), No Place for Truth is a contemporary jeremiad, a clarion call to all evangelicals to note well what a pass they have come to in capitulating to modernity, what a risk they are running by abandoning historic orthodoxy. It is provocative reading for scholars, ministers, seminary students, and all theologically concerned individuals.
Read and Download David McNab book No Place for Fairness in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Free book TNo Place for Fairness. This book was released on 2009 with total page 250 pages. Book excerpt: Aboriginal policy and claims negotiation in Canada is seen to be a murky and perplexing world that has become an important public issue and has significant policy implications for government spending. Aboriginal land policy in Canada began as an Aboriginal initiative. InNo Place for Fairness, David McNab - a long time advisor on land and treaty rights for both government and First Nations groups - looks at the Bear Island Indigenous rights case, initiated by the Teme-Augama Anishinabe, to explore why governments fail to deal effectively with Aboriginal land claims. The book, divided into two sections, includes a survey of the historical background of the Bear Island claim followed by a more personal series of reflections about what happened as the claim encountered decades of policy hurdles, court cases, public protests, and above all resistance by the Temagami First Nation. McNab provides details of how ministers and their senior officials resisted real efforts to resolve problems as well as examples of field staff resisting government attempts at resolution. He also shows that government entities such as the Indian Commission of Ontario and the Native Affairs Directorate were largely used as "mailboxes" where successive federal and provincial governments sent things they wanted to bury.No Place for Fairnessis the story of what happens when Aboriginal peoples' political rights are crammed into the Euro-Canadian legal system. McNab makes a clear case that a legalistic approach to these problems is wholly inadequate and that more important things - like fairness - must be recognized as paramount if a just and lasting Aboriginal land policy is to be created.

Read and Download Helen Smith book There's a Place For Us: The Musical Theatre Works of Leonard Bernstein in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Free book TThere's a Place For Us: The Musical Theatre Works of Leonard Bernstein. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 287 pages. Book excerpt: Leonard Bernstein was the quintessential American musician. Through his careers as conductor, pianist, teacher and television personality he became known across the US and the world, his flamboyance and theatricality making him a favourite with audiences, if not with critics. However, he is perhaps best remembered as a composer, particularly of the musical West Side Story, and for songs such as 'America', 'Tonight' and 'Somewhere'. Dr Helen Smith takes an in-depth look at all eight of Bernstein's musical theatre works, from the early On the Town written by the 26-year-old composer at the start of his career, to his second and last opera A Quiet Place in 1983; in between these two pieces he composed music for Trouble in Tahiti, Wonderful Town, Candide, West Side Story, Mass and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. These works are analysed and considered against a background of musical and social context, as well as looking at Bernstein's other orchestral, choral and chamber works. One important aspect examined is Bernstein's use of motifs in his theatre compositions, which takes them out of the realms of Broadway and into the sphere of symphonic writing. Smith provides an indispensable overview of the musical theatre works of an eclectic composer, and shows what it is that constitutes the Bernstein 'sound'.
