Book excerpt: Ba slipped the gold bangles from my wrists. The gold ones were plain so I didn’t mind taking them off, but I loved wearing my milk-glass bangles and the lakkh bracelets. "A widow can't wear bangles,” she said. "They are signs of a woman's good fortune. When your husband dies it's over." "What if my good fortune comes back?" “It doesn’t.”/DIV Pretty as a peacock, twelve-year-old Leela had been spoiled all her life. She doesn't care for school and barely marks the growing unrest between the British colonists and her own countrymen. Why should she? Her future has been planned since her engagement at two and marriage at nine. DIVLeela's whole life changes, though, when her husband dies. She's now expected to behave like a proper widow: shaving her head and trading her jewel-toned saris for rough, earth-colored ones. Leela is considered unlucky now, and will have to stay confined to her house for a year—keep corner—in preparation for a life of mourning for a boy she barely knew. When her schoolteacher hears of her fate, she offers Leela lessons at home. For the first time, despite her confinement, Leela opens her eyes to the changing world around her. India is suffering from a severe drought, and farmers are unable to pay taxes to the British. She learns about a new leader of the people, a man named Gandhi, who starts a political movement and practices satyagraha—non-violent protest against the colonists as well as the caste system. The quiet strength ofsatyagraha may liberate her country. Could she use the same path to liberate herself?

Free book TContemporary English-Language Indian Children's Literature. This book was released on 2011-05-09 with total page 228 pages. Book excerpt: Concurrent with increasing scholarly attention toward national children’s literatures, Contemporary English-language Indian Children’s Literature explores an emerging body of work that has thus far garnered little serious critical attention. Superle critically examines the ways Indian children’s writers have represented childhood in relation to the Indian nation, Indian cultural identity, and Indian girlhood. From a framework of postcolonial and feminist theories, children’s novels published between 1988 and 2008 in India are compared with those from the United Kingdom and North America from the same period, considering the differing ideologies and the current textual constructions of childhood at play in each. Broadly, Superle contends that over the past twenty years an aspirational view of childhood has developed in this literature—a view that positions children as powerful participants in the project of enabling positive social transformation. Her main argument, formed after recognizing several overarching thematic and structural patterns in more than one hundred texts, is that the novels comprise an aspirational literature with a transformative agenda: they imagine apparently empowered child characters who perform in diverse ways in the process of successfully creating and shaping the ideal Indian nation, their own well-adjusted bicultural identities in the diaspora, and/or their own empowered girlhoods. Michelle Superle is a Professor in the department of Communications at Okanagan College. She has taught children’s literature, composition, and creative writing courses at various Canadian universities and has published articles in Papers and IRCL.

Read and Download Maria K. DiBenedetto book Connecting Self-regulated Learning and Performance with Instruction Across High School Content Areas in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Free book TConnecting Self-regulated Learning and Performance with Instruction Across High School Content Areas. This book was released on 2018-07-23 with total page 471 pages. Book excerpt: This book shows how principles of self-regulated learning are being implemented in secondary classrooms. The 14 chapters are theoretically driven and supported by empirical research and address all common high school content areas. The book comprises 29 lesson plans in English language arts, natural and physical sciences, social studies, mathematics, foreign language, art, music, health, and physical education. Additionally, the chapters address students with special needs, technology, and homework. Each chapter begins with one or more lesson plans written by master teachers, followed by narratives explaining how the lesson plans were implemented. The chapters conclude with an analysis written by expert researchers of the self-regulated learning elements in the lessons. Each lesson and each analysis incorporate relevant educational standards for that area. Different types of high schools in several states serve as venues. This powerful new book edited by Maria K. DiBenedetto provides a unique and invaluable resource for both secondary teachers and researchers committed to supporting adolescents in the development of academic self-regulation. Each chapter is jointly written by teachers who provide a wealth of materials, including lesson plans, and researchers who situate these lesson plans and academic self-regulation goals within the larger work on self-regulation. The topics covered are far broader than any other book I have seen in terms of developing academic self-regulation, covering over a dozen content areas, including literacy, mathematics, social studies, the sciences, and the arts. Teachers and scholars alike will find this book a must read. Karen Harris, EdD, Arizona State University A practical and magnificent blend of educational research and application. This book goes beyond presenting the findings of research on self regulation by connecting detailed strategies that align with the standards to the research. DiBenedetto et al. clearly illustrate how to develop self regulated learners in the classroom. A refreshing must read for all secondary educators and educational researchers seeking to be well grounded in education research and practical application techniques. Heather Brookman, PhD, Fusion Academy- Park Avenue Self-regulated learning is a research-based process by which teachers help students realize their own role in the learning process. Connecting Self-Regulated Learning and Performance with Instruction Across High School Content Areas consists of model teachers’ lessons and analyses by prominent educational psychologists in the field of self-regulated learning. The book provides teachers with the tools needed to increase students’ awareness of learning and inspires all educators to use self-regulated learning to promote engagement, motivation, and achievement in their students. The book also provides administrators with the principles needed to infuse evidenced based self-regulated learning into their curriculum and instruction. I highly recommend the book! Read and Download John Booker book Maritime Quarantine in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Free book TMaritime Quarantine. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 644 pages. Book excerpt: As a maritime trading nation, the issue of quarantine was one of constant concern to Britain. Whilst naturally keen to promote international trade, there was a constant fear of importing potentially devastating diseases into British territories. In this groundbreaking study, John Booker examines the methods by which British authorities sought to keep their territories free from contagious diseases, and the reactions to, and practical consequences of, these policies. Drawing upon a wealth of documentary sources, Dr Booker paints a vivid picture of this controversial episode of British political and mercantile history, concluding that quarantine was a peculiarly British disaster, doomed to inefficiency by the royal prerogative and concerns for trade and individual liberty. Whilst it may not have fatally hindered the economic development of Britain, it certainly irritated the City and the mercantile elites and remained a source of constant political friction for many years. As such, an understanding of British maritime quarantine provides a fuller picture of attitudes to trade, culture, politics and medicine in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Read and Download Sushila Srivastava book Sex Roles of Children in Contemporary Indian Society in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Free book TSex Roles of Children in Contemporary Indian Society. This book was released on 1990 with total page 368 pages. Book excerpt: India has witnessed profound changes in almost every aspect of life. The process of industrialization, urbanisation and secularization have brought about socio-psychological changes in the attitudes and values of people of this country, especially among the urban population. One of the changes is breaking down of traditional sex-role differentiations resulting in an increased flexibility in the roles and activities considered permissible for each sex, especially for girls and women. Yet being still typically a traditional society, the effect of these secular changes is unknown or remains a guess. In this book, the author attempts to answer the question as to how far these changes have affected the sex-role behaviour of the Indian children. The exhaustive review of empirical studies on sex-roles is useful for those who wish to have a consolidated account of researches on sex-roles carried out till now. This book will be useful for parents, teachers, educators and students of Home Science, Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology.
