Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide a comprehensive and systematic account of the phenomenon of cinematic remaking. Drawing upon recent theories of genre and intertextuality, Film Remakes describes remaking as both an elastic concept and a complex situation, one enabled and limited by the interrelated roles and practices of industry, critics, and audiences. This approach to remaking is developed across three broad sections: the first deals with issues of production, including commerce and authors; the second considers genre, plots, and structures; and the third investigates issues of reception, including audiences and institutions.

Read and Download Iain Robert Smith book Transnational Film Remakes in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Free book TTransnational Film Remakes. This book was released on 2017-03-08 with total page 248 pages. Book excerpt: What happens when a film is remade in another national context? How do notions of translation, adaptation and localisation help us understand the cultural dynamics of these shifts, and in what ways does a transnational perspective offer us a deeper understanding of film remaking? Bringing together a range of international scholars, Transnational Film Remakes is the first edited collection to specifically focus on the phenomenon of cross-cultural remakes. Using a variety of case studies, from Hong Kong remakes of Japanese cinema to Bollywood remakes of Australian television, this book provides an analysis of cinematic remaking that moves beyond Hollywood to address the truly global nature of this phenomenon. Looking at iconic contemporary titles such as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Oldboy, as well as classics like La Bete Humaine and La Chienne, this book interrogates the fluid and dynamic ways in which texts are adapted and reworked across national borders to provide a distinctive new model for understanding these global cultural borrowings.

Read and Download Anat Zanger book Film Remakes as Ritual and Disguise in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Free book TFilm Remakes as Ritual and Disguise. This book was released on 2006 with total page 158 pages. Book excerpt: The first full-length history of the remake in cinema, Film Remakes as Ritual and Disguise is also the first book to explore how and why these stories are told. Anat Zanger focuses on contemporary retellings of three particular tales—Joan of Arc, Carmen, and Psycho—to reveal what she calls the remake’s “rituals of disguise.” Joan of Arc, Zanger demonstrates, later appears as the tough, androgynous Ripley in the blockbuster Alien series and the God-ridden Bess in Lars Von Trier’s Breaking the Waves. Ultimately, these remake chains offer evidence of the archetypes of our own age, cultural “fingerprints” that are reflective of society’s own preferences and politics. Underneath the redundancy of the remake, Zanger shows, lies our collective social memory. Indeed, at its core the lowly remake represents a primal attempt to gain immortality, to triumph over death—playing at movie theaters seven days a week, 365 days a year. Addressing the wider theoretical implications of her argument with sections on contemporary film issues such as trauma, jouissance, and censorship, Film Remakes as Ritual and Disguise is an insightful addition to current debates in film theory and cinema history.

Book excerpt: In recent years, with the establishment of the Hong Kong Film Archive and growing scholarly interest in the history of Hong Kong cinema, previously neglected historical documents and difficult-to-access films have offered new research materials. As Hong Kong film history comes into sharper focus, its inextricable links across the decades to Southeast Asia, Korea, Japan, the United States, and to the far reaches of the Chinese diaspora have also become more evident. Hong Kong’s connection with Hollywood involves ties that bring together art cinema and popular genres as well as film festivals and the media marketplace with popular transnational genres. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 252 pages. Book excerpt: Cinema has the capacity to enflame our passions, to arouse our pity, to inspire our love. Feeling Film is a book that examines the emotional encounters found in contemporary popular cinema cultures. Examining melodrama, film noir, comic book franchises, cult indie movies and romantic comedy within the context of a Jungian-informed psychology and contemporary movements in film-philosophy, this book considers the various kinds of feelings engendered by our everyday engagements with cinema. Greg Singh questions the popular idea of what cinema is, and considers what happens during the anticipation and act of watching a movie, through to the act of sharing our feelings about them, the reviewing process and repeat-viewing practices. Feeling Film does this through a critique of purely textual approaches, instead offering a model which emphasises lived, warm (embodied and inhabited) psychological relationships between the viewer and the viewed. It extends the narrative action of cinema beyond the duration of the screening into realms of anticipation and afterlife, in particular providing insight into the tertiary and participatory practices afforded through rich media engagement. In rethinking the everyday, co-productive relationship between viewer and viewed from this perspective, Feeling Film reinstates the importance of feelings as a central concern for film theory. What emerges from this study is a re-engagement of the place of emotion, affect and feeling in film theory and criticism. In reconsidering the duration of the cinematic encounter, Feeling Film makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the inter-subjective relationship between viewer and viewed. It takes post-Jungian criticism into the realms of post-cinema technologies and reignites the dialogue between depth psychology and the study of images as they appear to, and for, us. This book will make essential reading for those interested in the relationship between film and aspects of depth psychology, film and philosophy students at advanced undergraduate and postgraduate levels, film and cinema academics and cinephiles.

Download The American Horror Film PDF

Read and Download Denis Memedoski book The American Horror Film in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Free book TThe American Horror Film. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 17 pages. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Film Science, grade: 1, University of Salzburg, language: English, abstract: Original and Remake - what are the differences, what are the similarities? What mattered then and what matters now? The American slasher film has many influences that need to be illustrated through the history of horror cinema, and to, furthermore, understand why a horror movie is apt to turn real life issues, sensitive topics and personal predicament into metaphors for the audience to watch in theaters or on their television screens at home. Alfred Hitchcock, Mario Bava, John Carpenter and Bob Clark (whose 1974 movie Black Christmas will be the main subject) have all influenced the horror film with their visionary direction, their addressing of sensitive subjects and the uniqueness of suspense-buildup in their films. Many filmmakers are influenced by the creative approaches the aforementioned directors took, referencing them, copying them, or even remaking their films. Movie remakes have always existed, as for instance, John Carpenter’s remake of Christian Nyby’s horror/sci-fi movie The Thing from another World (1951). However, looking back, remakes have not been as prominent as they are these days. The “remake craze” experienced a boost in 2008 and again in 2010 when thirteen remakes were released, respectively, to theaters in the United States. There are still remakes soon to be released and some soon to undergo production. The hows and whys might deduce from cultural and social changes. Most remakes do well in theaters, audiences do not seem to mind to have the same story retold to them with flashier visuals; and movie production companies, of course, welcome the remake trend. To them it is less of a risk to remake than to try out and maybe fail at the box office with introducing a new franchise. Since audiences do not seem to mind (and the box office numbers encourage this opinion, see Figure 5), production companies are going to play it safe.
